Oh c**p! Well, I wanted to answer before reading everyone else's answers so I replied to the top portion first. Sorry - didn't see about posting the answer here til too late! LOL.
Ah...figured out how to delete my error, so here's my reply.....
Andy:
Going to reply here before looking at anyone else's answers. I think I'd prefer the more horizontal crop, but I think I'd have framed it a bit higher, i.e., more trees, slightly less water - just shift the frame up a touch.
The vertical crop seems to me to pull the eye straight out to the trees on the other side of the water, and the foreground becomes nothing more than a frame.
Of course, maybe that's what you intended. :)

Hi, Deb. Thanks for the comment.
This is an easy place to visit so i can try again. But i was aiming more for water than sky trying to remember the 'rule of thirds' placing the shore line in the upper third.
The sky was beautiful but my settings screwed that up.
BTW, these shots are pretty much as they came out of the camera, no cropping or adjustments.
These comments are terrific, we all can get tips and expand our views and knowledge.
Thanks again.
normally I like horizontal shots best, but in both of these cases, I tend toward the vertical shots - because I think the vertical shots make the tree+ reflection look longer and more dramatic!
Of the second set, I like A better because of the overhanging leaves in the foreground. I played with it a little. I straightened it, cropped a bit off the right, and increased the saturation just a little bit.
Nice shot of the two of you. Coincidentally, I just finished watching Jeopardy which I had recorded earlier. I was especially curious after Jenterline had asked about the NYC librarian.
same here Susan...
posted some of mine for Jill....I had one regret and that was not having a 2nd camera when I was up top....now I'll never get the chance!
I climbed those millions of stairs too - about 20 years ago - and experienced such vertigo at the top that I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to get down! Eventually I went down on my butt, step by step.....!
