My mantises don't seem to like the rain, and must be in hiding. I meant to take a shot of a few little ones on the bee balm which is in full bloom right now, but I waited too long and once it started raining again I couldn't find them. This is a pic from a few days ago with one of the little guys on the Abelia Grandiflora, the shrub just outside the sunroom where my mantis-watching days first began about 8 years ago.
I spotted a few little guys in several locations today. Some of them are appearing noticeably larger, relatively speaking. Here's one I shot on a bee balm leaf. I think I got a little more mantis detail in this pic.
Cool, glad you found one. There must be many siblings out there, it's too small to have ventured far.
I have not seen any in the back yard where I got the 'eruption' pics but they are easy to find in the front garden. Still very small, nothing is growing in this cool dampness. I feel like I'm in Vancouver, lol.
Hurrah! I finally spotted one this morning. I scared him out of the window box when I was watering and he scurried up the wall. :) He's a young 'un - about 2" long. Yay!
These are really neat shots, dasia. None of my little ones have ever ventured onto my fingers or hands. I have had some of the big ones in my hand, though. I'm still having a tough time getting sharp pics of mine. Nine out of ten pics get deleted.
It had been more than 10 days since I had seen my little mantids and I was concerned that the birds had eaten them all while I was away. I finally did spot a few in new locations. Not surprisingly they've grown, but are still relatively small. I'd say 1 1/4" is their average length. Only one that I've seen is still tan, and the others are sporting new green bodies. This little guy was on one of my anemone leaves yesterday.
a very light lunch yesterday...Ok so I did have a bit more bread, and a few slices of a prosciuttino that I've been picking on lately....
was going to use this in our Black/White thread but I have the rest of the week lined up...
Morning from Mukilteo, WA.
Looking out from our backyard a couple minutes later....
As you can see we are in for a wonderful day. "They" say it may hit 50 out. We'll see but it surely will be a great day for a walk.
Happy Thursday Daily Pics!
Nice bird shot, GTO.
It's a balmy 27 F here with bright sun. We may get an inch or two tomorrow but no brutal cold is expected.
The Old Farmers Almanac may have been right about central US having a colder than normal winter.
