I just finished Harvesting the Heart by Jodi Picault. Thanks for the tip, SJ, it was excellent, hard to put down.

Thank you, Library folks! I will stop in at the local and see about the "ILL".

My public library doesn't charge for ILL, but some may.

Deb, you can go to your local library and ask to borrow it on Interlibrary Loan. They will get it for you from a library that owns it and then you just check it out. If you are connected with a college in any way, they will probably do it for free. I think the public libraries will charge you (but not anywhere as much as it will cost to buy it). I was the head of Interlibrary Loan at Cornell for many years and this is all we did! WorldCat was our bible.

Wow! That's a handy site. I see the nearest is in Roanoke, VA. (291 miles). As luck would have it, that's where my brother lives, so next time I go for a visit, I can scope it out. Thanks, Keet.

Deb, I'd never previously heard of "WorldCat" but looks like just the service to "find in a library" any book you are seeking

Keet - Looks like I'll have to find Exploring with Custer at the library. Just looked it up on Amazon - even the used price on that one's a bit up there. It sounds like it's worth searching out tho. :>

Exploring with Custer sounds fascinating, Keet. My favorite book in that "area" so far is Son of the Morning Star, by Evan Connell. If this is an area of interest for you, I highly recommend it. To quote a review, "part anthropological study of Plains Indian life, part military history, and part character study of the principal actors in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Evan Connell's work presents the first truly balanced account of Custer's career."

Upon viewing Dick's wonderful Black Hills photos this morning, two books about that region came to mind, and both are lying on our great room coffee table. In God's Country authored and photographs by Johnny Sundby & John A. Sundby, a Son and Father team living in Rapid City. Exploring with Custer The 1874 Black Hills Expedition by Ernest Grafe & Paul Horsted. The first of these is a beautifully constructed, and very small photo-book of the Black Hills area. Johnny was a photo journalist for the local Rapid City Journal, and his father John one of the more successful Rapid City Realtors, along with Johnny's mother, Kathy. The second is also somewhat a photo journal of the Black Hills, but very much more comprehensive than the first. It details through 1874 photographs and journals, the travels of General Custer's Expedition compared with modern day photographs captured from the very same location throughout Custer's travels in this area. The authors note "General George Armstrong Custer's journey to the Black Hills in 1874 was better documented than any other military expedition of the Old West". A fact which is made overwhelmingly clear early on in this historical rendition of Custer's travels.
