Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Locked 'N Loadedwas last night's film. Yes, Deb, it certainly was laugh out loud funny in many places. There were a lot of pieces of comedic business that fit the film despite all the violence implied or otherwise, and the characters, for the most part, were very amusing. Sting portraying the father of an adult man was rather interesting. Thanks for the recommendation.

Keith, we watched Get Smart several weeks ago and thought it was quite funny--loved the artifacts from the TV show scattered about in this movie.

If you want some light fluff, and comedy, GET SMART was our cabin entertainment, via special delivery from Southern California, no less. Our visitors laughed the night away. I found particular humor in all the "Secret Agent" vs "Analyst" conflict. Surprising similarities to my time "inside the beltway!" The kids here (2 - 18 year-olds, and a 10 year-old) laughed the evening away. Here is the link

Last night we watched the film Andy had recommended, King of Masks. It is a Chinese film, made in 1999. I just loved it! First of all, I am a sucker for gorgeous cinematography and this really had it. The story was poetic and beautifully done. Highly recommended! Thanks Andy.

Synecdoche, New York sounds like one of those you've-got-to-be in-the-mood-for-it films. I'll put it on our list for one of those days. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a brilliant actor. Ms Bop, James Bond leaves you cold? Isn't that unAmerican? Hmm, perhaps unBritish. Chuckling here.

I really want to see Milk. James Bond leaves me cold, though.
A few nights ago we watched Synecdoche, New York written and directed by Charlie Kaufman, with Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the main role. I was ready for weird, having seen Kaufman's Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation. This was every bit as complex and weird as they were, but it was also, at least for me, totally depressing. Hoffman plays a director who is a hypochondriac and takes 20 years to direct the perfect play about all the angst and pain of life. Typically, it was hard to tell what was real and what was surreal. Very dark and existential. I don't think I'd want to see it again.

Last night, it was Quantum of Solace (2008) starring Daniel Craig as James Bond and featuring Dame Judi Dench as his handler, "M." Giancarlo Giannini, one of my favorite Italian actors, is also featured as a "retired" operative. While much of the film was shot in Italy, we do get to travel a lot of the world during this flick.

This is pure escapism and a bit of an adrenaline rush here and there. I've been enjoying James Bond (with rare exceptions) since I watched Goldfinger starring Sean Connery at a theater in Beirut, Lebanon way back in 1964.

Daniel Craig is my favorite Bond and he delivered again in this film. It did lag now and again, but it was still good old Bond action, intrigue, action, passion, action, mayhem, action, resolution. Aside from the Jason Bourne series, there is no better action film series for my money than Bond. James Bond.

Five stars with admitted prejudice.

Tonight we watched Milk starring Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, and James Franco. The Best Actor Oscar went to Sean Penn for this role and, in my opionion, it was well deserved. The mix of documentary footage within the film adds a level of authenticity although the movie does seem slow in places. It's a story worth knowing and, for those of us old enough to remember the actual events portrayed in Milk, the movie is a reminder of just how far we've come in the arena of human rights. All in all, it's a good film with a great performance by Penn. Four out of five stars.

We saw The Express a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Dennis Quade is usually quite good in sports movies. Have you seen The Rookie, Louie?
