I've never seen Sergeant York. I'll add to my list.

Back to actresses, 3 more foreign film women I would add to your list are Isabel Huppert, Judy Davis and Kristen Scott Thomas. I just saw Kristen Scott Thomas in the French film I've loved you so long. I think it was a phenomenal performance by her as a woman who has just been released from 15 years in prison and is trying to cope with life outside. I guess she is doing more French films than English ones these days.

Prime Suspect is on our "to view" list, Deb.

Tonight we finally watched Sergeant York (1941). This Howard Hawks film was full of historical surprises. Gary Cooper was selected by the actual Sgt. York for the title role in the movie. A couple of other demands were made by York regarding the film; no "phoney heroics" and his wife could not be portrayed by a Hollywood "glamour girl." It turns out, too, that Sgt. York -- one of the greatest heroes of WWI--entered the US Army as a draftee only after his request for conscientious objector status was denied by the draft board. Gary Cooper won the best actor Oscar for this performance. I'd give the movie four of five stars.

I have a 3-day weekend so I hope we'll get to see a movie. Helen Mirren is a fave of ours, too, Rok. Did you see her "Prime Suspect" series on BBC or PBS? (Oop, I guess thats' TV.)

It seems none of the characters resonated with me and I've never been much of a Penelope Cruz fan though I did enjoy her performance in Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Among my favorite contemporary European actresses, I'd list Juliette Binoche, Helen Mirren, Rachel Weisz, and Julie Delpy (I like her music, too). Contemporary American actresses on my list are Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, Ellen Burstyn, Laura Linney, Jodie Foster, Shirley MacLaine, Julianne Moore, Bebe Neuwirth (saw her on Broadway in Chicago a number of years ago--fantastic!), Julia Roberts, and Hilary Swank (she's a hometown girl--once lived in a run down trailer park with her mom here in Lincoln). I'm sure I've missed many others I enjoy. I do like most Woody Allen movies, just not so hot about this one. Back when there was so much buzz about Brokeback Mountain, I was the odd person out, too. I thought the movie was just another story about self indulgence, selfishness. Not about love. Philadelphia, on the other hand, was (for me) a love story and portrayed more accurately the relationships of gay men I know. Though I must admit there is an inordinate number of cowboys in this part of the country. Smile.

I guess I just like Woody. Didn't you love the way Penelope Cruz blasted onto the scene?

Louie, we watched the Vicki Barcelona movie a few weeks ago and couldn't find a reason for all the buzz. I enjoy many of Woody Allen's movies, but this one...I dunno, it just didn't work for us. Now, Annie Hall--there was a movie.

we watched Vicki, Christina, Barcelona last night....a Woody Allen movie.....it was OK I guess and it's told as if someone was reading a script....ends in a typical Woddy allen was, with no hint or reason

Last night we watched one of my top tens, The Girl on the Bridge. The plot doesn't begin to describe the beauty of this film and I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Briefly, it is about a down on his luck knife-thrower, magician, gambler and a down on her luck young woman who meet on a bridge in Paris. It is beautifully shot in black and white. It is very poetic and erotic without any actual sex scenes. Here is one of the famous scenes:

Daniel Auteuil and Vanessa Paradis are both amazing!

We like the movies, however it seems that we seldom have (or make) the time to sit back, relax, fetch a bucket of popcorn and enjoy a video story. We are drawn more to the independent and foreign movies, but also like seeing the "popular" new releases on the big screen. When I lived in downtown Denver I would frequent the Landmark Mayan on a weekly basis. A theater known for its independent & foreign fare.

Our last movie, Pierre Morel's Taken was a disappointment. While DeeDee sees Liam Neeson as "easy on the eyes" he must have taken several thousand shots fired directly at him with automatic weapons, got involved in dozens of overwhelming bare handed fights, and not a single hair on his head ever mussed. Perhaps we just found it as a compelling story, poorly told!

We watched Changling a couple of weeks ago and thought Ms Jolie was excellent. She does fit that era, Deb. We were stunned by the attitude of the LAPD hierarchy as represented in the film.
