There is a bird sanctuary- actually a large swamp - near Port of Spain, Trinidad, where thousands of Scarlet Ibis, White Ibis, and various Herons and Egrets nest in the trees each night. At sunset, hundreds of them come flocking in to the trees. Probably the most amazing sight I've ever seen in nature. Any way, this photo, was taken from a great distance, in a rocking boat, over the shoulder of 2 other people - so not the best quality, but it does show the intense color of the birds.

Comment by Wildflowernut on January 14, 2012 at 4:40pm What an amazing experience! I notice one of the ibis is greyish in color - is that a young bird, or what?
Comment by DebinSC on January 14, 2012 at 5:09pm Yes, a juvenile. We were so far away from them and it was really impossible to get good shots, so we snapped a few as best we could and then sat back and enjoyed the show.
Comment by Bebop on January 14, 2012 at 7:17pm Gasp! I would LOVE to have been there.
I'm jealous !!
Sounds like a real thrill. Beats my experience in St. Augustine at the rookery.
Comment by DebinSC on January 15, 2012 at 8:45am Thanks, all. At one point, the full moon rose above the pink clouds and flocks of the Ibis were coming in against that background. Oh the missed photos! LOL. It made a permanent impression in my memory, though.
They sure are eye-catchers, great shot, too, Deb.
