My "old" photo of the boy playing the accordion made me think of all the orphaned children who wandered the streets of Naples after WWII--this was the most heavily bombed Italian city during that war and thousands of children were left parentless and homeless. I wanted to title the photo with the Neapolitan dialect word used to describe those children but I had never seen it writ--only heard it spoken. So, I enlisted the help of my Italian "niece" and her grandma (my Italian mama) to determine the correct spelling of the word. It is SCUGNIZZO for a boy and SCUGNIZZI for children. The plural is pronounced skoo-nyeez-zee.
Better late than never.
I was "adopted" by this family when I worked for NATO and lived near Naples nearly thirty years ago. The family has a very colorful history and "mama" was actually rescued by American GIs when they entered her town as she was being interrogated by Nazi agents. Her late husband was part of the Italian resistance. Scugnizzo is a word a great gravitas to the WWII era Neapolitans so I wanted to be sure to use it correctly.
Thank you so much, Iris, for your kind words about my photos. I have been enjoying some of your ethnic photos a great deal. We are hopng to make a trip to Africa within the next couple of years--it's my wife's life-long goal. Thank you, again.
Actually we are experiencing some beautiful weather now but yes, the nights are getting a bit chilly. Days are between 60-76 and sunny. Enjoy the last days of summer...
I was invited to a family campout on Salt Spring Island this upcoming weekend to celebrate the one year anniversary of Marianna's death. I will bypass it and pet sit instead with short forays to get pictures of something or other. My current task is Waterfalls.
