excellent control of the highlights. Beautiful frame fill. Really well done - I also like Wildflowernut's idea.

Very, very well done. since this is so sharp, it might be fun to experiment with lopping off the top near the upper pane divider in the window and lopping off the right side just to the left (our left) of the shovel. Just a thought. Like it a lot an…

beautiful color!

Nice capture of the flower's detail. I might try to show the entire flower, too, just for another idea.

Gorgeous flowers with such brilliant color! My parents used to have some behind their fence, but they were sprayed when the alley was sprayed for weeds, and that killed them off.

Reworking the Long's Peak photo

So, I posted up a photo of Long's Peak and got a couple of comments on it, one of which was about cropping it.

Eventually I had the time to revisit the photo and do the suggested work on it.

First question is this: why a 10:8 proportion? Just one I hadn't really heard of related to photography (which just shows what I have to learn :)

At any rate, during the process of cropping I made a mistake that I turned out to like as well - I didn't notice that I had the grayscale layer active (from the… Continue

Thanksgiving was almost the last day in our house

Well, it was actually on Sunday. Due to some family issues we had Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday this year. All was going well, I got the turkey in on time and all was coming together.

I took the turkey out of the oven set it on the stove, and put the rolls in to warm. As we're getting everything on the table, we started to smell something burning.

Check the rolls - they're OK.

Bottom of the oven - messy, but nothing apparent.

Burners? Likewise.

One of the guests noticed smoke coming from th… Continue

A Walk on a Summer Morning

I got up early because my wife told me our daughter had a 7AM soccer game. Turns out there's a slight misunderstanding. Amazing how much difference one little (well, OK, it's a capital) letter can make.

As long as I was up and I couldn't go fire up the table saw I thought I'd grab the camera and head out for a bit of a walk. I ended up going farther than I intended, but it is a nice day.

There's been a lot of construction just north of our house. There are some businesses and a housing develop… Continue

Some Terminology

Let me start off by saying that we're all here to socialize and share some pictures.

Having said that, I thought I'd write up a short post that has a discussion on some terminolory with a couple of links.

First, ISO. ISO refers to the sensitivity that film has to light. A higher ISO number means the film is more sensitive to light. This sensitivity has a cost though - a grainier picture. Now, if we're using digital then we have an ISO equivalent. It has the same effect. Here's a tutorial that… Continue

A Sunday afternoon walk

(and an accusation - we'll get to that later)

So, I took a walk around a small local reservoir Sunday afternoon. Tom Frost Reservoir at the corner of 128th Avenue and Lowell Ave in Broomfield, just a couple three miles from our house.

I pulled into the parking area and while I was getting the camera and tripod out I heard a hawk. I looked around, and in a half-dead tree I saw this one:

Hi Ken~ You're right, Seward gets lots of rain and wind; we only stayed 2 1/2 days last week due to gale force winds/rain. There was a brief period of about 5 hours w/good weather. But, it's only 4 hours from here and is a great change of scenery.

"It looks like they put adobe fronts on existing caves - would that be accurate?"

Ken-It seems the Pueblos did do some shaping of the doorways on some caves but, otherwise, the caves are as essentially in their natural condition.

Love the blue cast. I've been getting several shots in that type of light this year. Marvelous warm oasis in the middle of this.

This new lens is terrific to pull this off. That's about as shallow a depth as I have seen. It works really well here.

Typical woman - attention is on a conversation somewhere. (I know I'll be curcified for that statement [grin]) Again very soft in focus.
