Off On a Road Trip

Headed North on Thursday for a weekend in the old stomping grounds. Drove past Whiskeytown Lake at sunset but couldn't stop to watch it as dinner was waiting in Dairyville. Friday Patti and I headed north on I-5 determined to connect 9 hours later with Amtrak in Portland (she was continuing on to Tacoma). In the event we don't connect I have 2-2.5 more hours to drive to get to Port Orchard. Miraculously we made it with an hour to spare. I dropped Patti off at Union Station then headed for dinContinue

Difficult to Find Time and Opportunity for Photography

Since I moved here on May 1st I haven't had a lot of enthusiasm for shooting pics. The mornings start out foggy on the beach (1 mile away) with a heavy marine layer overhead. Around noon the sun might make an appearance for the remainder of the day. Can't always count on that though and that direct sun of the midday doesn't create the ideal environment for photos. In addition I am still involved with the task of replacing electrical fixtures, getting the plumbing up to date in 3 bathrooms, uContinue

Zero Hour is zooming up on me

Tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. I pick up the UHaul Truck in which I will move from Portland-Metro to the North Coast of California. Reality is sinking in. I can't believe it is really this close. 2 rooms remain unpacked and unorganized. I don't think it will be a problem but I must say it is a bit scary. I had to revert to Plan B when Robin called last night to let me know her Dad is in the ICU with Pneumonia and other serious problems. She had planned to accompany my trip south as the driver of m… Continue

Only if the picture is used for a commercial purpose would the publisher ever ask for a release

The confusion over whether a public object can be photographed and published most usually comes from persons who arrive at the stock photography industry through the commercial door rather than through the editorial door. For example, photographers who have worked for a newspaper most of their career, know that model or property releases are not needed if the photo is to be used "to inform or to educate." Conversely, photographers who have worked in the commercial or advertising sector, e.g. cor… Continue

A Word or Two about Night Photography

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on this but I am willing to share my observations and experience in this area. Manual Settings: I have used both f5.6 and f11. f11 gives you a sharper picture and star effects on the lights. It requires a longer shutter 20-30 seconds if its pretty dark and pushes the limits of my Rebel XT. f5.6 gives you a softer and sometimes more romantic look and depending upon available light a much shorter shutter. I've had luck handholding the camera when I'm shooting at f5.6… Continue

Let me say This about That

You'd never guess this but I am ECLECTIC. Not only that but it's been said that I march to a different drummer. My photographic interests are all over the map. West Coast Volcanoes, Florals (wild and domestic), Waterfalls, Nature's flora and fauna all top the list. But I am also into Human interest, as long as it is non-invasive, and PETS (probably due to proximity). I am big on Road Trips, travelling with my dogs, usually from point to point, but with lots of diversions along the way. YouContinue

Superb catch. 5 I always like the way the nuthatches look like they were shorted in the tail department. Just proves a big rudder isn't necessary when you are good at navigation! [grin]
