Terrapin Nesting Season

We visited Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge this weekend. JBWR is one of the most important urban wildlife refuges in the United States. Encompassing 9,155 acres, it is comprised of diverse habitats, including salt marsh, upland field and woods, several fresh and brackish water ponds and an open expanse of bay and islands- all located within the limits of New York City. (http://www.nyharborparks.org/visit/jaba.html) Its Terrapin nesting seas… Continue

Spring Mating Ritual

Yesterday hubby and I visited a pond on Long Island, and were "treated" to a geese mating ritual that neither of us had ever seen before. I think that Nature is amazing and found this to be a great educational opportunity, however in deference to personal taste, I will publish this series of events as a blog rather than on the Main Page: At first they ignored each other, then suddenly the female started it - she charged the male and began vigorously pecking at his back - then he turned on her a… Continue

Geese on Ice

One winter day in the park, I took a series of shots of geese on the frozen lake. I figured this might be the best forum for posting them! They have all been edited with the Dry Brush filter to soften them and make them look more arty:

Ever Changing Seasons: (2) Winter

When I did my first blog about Autumn, I intended to do one for each passing season....but as it turned out, it seems I wasn't really looking forward to Winter very much and didn't get around to doing a blog about season #2 as it crept in. But while winter will never be my favorite season, I realize now that I did notice much more beauty in winter, through the lens of my camera, than I have ever noticed before. So that in itself is reason enough to give winter the credit that is it's due. So her… Continue

Coming out "real"

I have been inspired by all of you who use your 'real' photos as avatars, and especially recently by Dasia and Deb who have changed or added a real photo. But I am not very photogenic, and I am not ready to give up the avatar I have been using for all my social networking sites (I am really attached to it for some reason) but feel I have been a part of this community long enough to reveal my true self, so here is my 'real' photo, though I couldn't resist using an artistic filter on it:… Continue

Ever Changing Seasons: Autumn

A blog dedicated to the ever-changing seasons: It seems we just get into one season and start feeling comfortable with it, and then the small, subtle signs of change, that ever-constant movement toward the next season, begins. This blog is a photo-documentation of those changes. AUTUMN: The leaves are falling one by one Now that September's nearly done. Soon they'll fall in twos and threes Until there's none left on the trees! ~~Me :-) In early September, park paths are already covered… Continue

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge

The entrance to the pedestrian walkway of the Brooklyn Bridge is only two blocks from one of the locations where I work. So on my lunch hour yesterday, I decided to take a walk. I have walked the entire bridge, from Manhattan to Brooklyn, a couple of times in the past, but never with my camera. I would have liked to go all the way across and back, but it's quite a distance (over a mile one way) and I didn't have the time. Some info about the Brooklyn Bridge: The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the ol… Continue

Learning Curve....

It's funny......every time I get a really great idea, someone beats me to it! Everytime!!! I mean, its starting to become more than just a coincidence!! Either that, or I am just slow to act (a distinct possibility!). Just this morning, on my morning walk (when I do all my best thinking) I was thinking [!!!] about starting a blog with my own daily pics, and next thing I look, Ken has just started one! Well, why not? It's a great idea! (Thanks for confirming that, Ken!!) Besides being a good way… Continue

This photo of wild crab apples ~ poet food. A beautiful allegory of Ambition - both hopeful and thwarted. While energized by the broad sweeping curves and attempts at fullness and colour, we are humbled by bearing witness to the ultimate results of…
