CHERYL'S COYOTE

The Ranger stuck his head in the car window and whistled in appreciation, “Nice little coyote you got there!” he said, nodding at the dog. The cat smiled up at him and started to purr from her seat in back beside the dog. Marty and I looked at each other. We tried to comprehend what the man was saying. “Where’d you get ‘er from? Boy! She’s a beaut!” The Ranger was purely ecstatic. The cat apparently thought he was complimenting _her._ After all, she had raised the dog, maybe she was having those… Continue

RAY and BABY (part 2)

Bob opened the door, and there was Baby-- waiting at the door for me. She seemed to have this _thing_ for me, but really, I had a soft spot for that big blonde, too. As I’d gotten to know Bob’s medley of mutts (the guard dogs that he trained) I’d gotten to know his cats as well, and as I said in Part One, I’m big man, and a combat Marine, and I’m proud to say I’m a cat man. And my big blonde Baby was just one of the cats. She loved to snuggle with her brothers and sisters, and one of them even… Continue

WHEN THE TORNADO HIT THE DESERT

A certain young family man down the road a piece got home from work just in time to see the henhouse from across the road blow past (without the hens), and as he pulled up to his mobile. he sat in horror as the top ripped off the place like the lid off a tin can in the freak 103mph wind, rain, lightning storm (hurricane-force winds) we had in Sandy Valley, Nevada (USA) back in the 1980s. (We even saw the funnel cloud!) He went indoors to see the rain falling into his open house, and to experienc… Continue

A note from the writer about how Baby became a house cat

and a disclaimer regarding the rescuing of wild animals: _CALL THE PROFESSIONALS!_ Bob had been hunting—back 35 years ago, California was one of many states that paid a bounty on mountain lions, coyotes, wolves, etc., and Bob shot her mother. Hearing a baby cry, Bob investigated and found a t baby spotted female cougar cub. Feeling like a murderer, Bob packed the tiny cub home and put her to nurse on a house cat who had just weaned a litter. Eventually, she grew up into a beautiful mountain lio… Continue

RAY and BABY (part one)

Don’t worry about Baby,” Bob said. “This is usually her bedroom when nobody stays over.” Bob trained guard dogs for a living. He trained poodles to be killer guard dogs, and they make very good guard dogs, too. He trained the regular big dogs for guard dogs, but the poodle thing really impressed me. I mean, poodles are supposed to be _cute_, for Pete’s sake! I even helped him lease a poodle to a minute-mart place that kept getting robbed. I put on a mask and went to come in the door to simulat… Continue

THE OCEAN'S 11 FLOP

Out in Jean, 30 miles north of the Nevada state line with California, they had some excitement when some lame-brained movie buffs set up to rob one of the casinos a la _Oceans’ Eleven._ It’s been about twenty years since they caused folks so much collateral mischief by wrecking the electric switching station out by Jean. The power outage extended to Goodsprings, whose good people were out of power for something like three months. No electric meant no water from their wells, which meant no water… Continue

One Dark Night On the Road

". . . my car broke down and I had to hoof it back into town. I had my thumb out but nobody was gonna stop for me. It was when I was up north, in the summer. I was walkin' along, just enjoying the night sounds, you know. It was about halfway to town and I-don't-know-what-time-o'clock when I felt like somebody or something was staring at my back. I'd felt that way before, when my target was tracking _me_. That's real bad, and it only happened to me once. There was a mole in the CIA. They pulled… Continue

Bill, Bill from over the Hill

“... never worked and never will’, that’s me, Girl. Yup, that’s me alright. . . But it’s not, you know. I always worked hard. I been a hard rock miner, a underground miner, and a high mucky-muck chef for **** International (hotel chain). At the same time as I did the chef thing, I was also undercover for the CIA. I’d waltz into some big hotel kitchen in some country that had problems or a problem person or an uprising or something. I’d have my two little teacup poodles with me; one in each shirt… Continue

NEVADA DREAMING

Changing subjects, we're now on my Stories from Nevada string, and yes, it's new right now. There was the time my friend Ruthie from Tonopah went out with her great-granddad to learn to drive. It's one of my favorite stories: So Grandpa comes by the house in his old pickup, and he tells me to get in. I'm so nervous I'm shaking. Grandpa reaches under the seat and pulls out a quart canning jar half full of something he presses on me, "Have some of this Panther Piss, Kid," he says to me. After a c… Continue
