Painting

On the dizzy skyscraper’s Bamboo scaffold a man’s body Is etched against the hot sky He is a mere painted figure On the vast canvas of the sky. Somebody painted him there. Continue

Trains

Trains bring people to river canals Where death is a mere after-fact Submerged in flowing green waters. It is like what your life’s beginning was When you were sleeping in your mother Submerged in a sea of emerald aqua With your eyes closed in green oblivion. Continue

music for the old

my ears are drums emptied of sounds please play music for my eyes and thought my body still vibrates and feet-taps to heavenly music heard behind my eye-lids and my skin perks up to beauty-thoughts. Continue

Morning in Hyderabad

The morning slowly dries wet clothes, Dripping, they smell of blue detergent The house there wakes up bleary-eyed Hesitating shadows emerge from the walls A varnished gate, the midget of a woman On the concrete bench, in the garden Measuring the length of her shadow. Continue

From the window

This wordy struggle went on for too long It is airy words which chased beauty-thoughts In his folded figure on the window. A little heaving bird on the electric wires Played high drama in shrill baritone Poetry came and went with wind and rain Premature and dusty on fragrant creepers Their flowers became stars on moonless nights. Miracles

The leaves felt disconnected on the sudden earth The sky was broken in parts, teasing through Tiny leaf-spaces full of squirrel tails and red ants For some reason all our prayers were held up On tiled roofs and history’s banyan treetops We squatted on the cement steps, waiting for miracles The neighborhood thatched hut sat immobile The gold of its last summer turning to weary gray. The grass walks tired of several days’ soundless feet Between us arose questions of unspoken skepticism Our eyes sh… Continue

The lake

A mustachioed gentleman in military overalls Takes us through coin drops of silver rain on the lake A reluctant lake overwhelmed by ruined forts And pleasure-seeking city slickers on yellow boats. This very gentleman had broken brown bread then On the lake-side with us and spread epicurean delights His mustache properly twirled in royal pride. Then the night was deep and dark and tongues of fire Cast shadows which quickly climbed the mango trees. There are many crocodiles under our feet, saysContinue

Visit to Orcha: A visual exploration

River and tree look on morning town And on the bridge and men and women With loads of firewood from the forest A bare-bodied man has sun on face. Off the bridge a wizened old man With saffron cloth drying on river rocks Bends exquisitely with age and beauty. A woman in red bathes on the river bed. In the distance is the bank and history’s spires On the bank a woman pours water in river From a steel pot in oblation, to the sun. As the sun glistens on the shaken river River beats rocks in softContinue

women and city

actually time sleeps at night while cities sleep in daytime but their sleep gently touches us in the evening as stale jasmines remembered in time's sleep their sleep is in opaque eyes hidden in women's shadows which get up and go after dusk. Continue

The temple in the jungle

Just when the temple bell rang In the silence of the jungle amidst Scattered temple pieces in the trees There they stood beaming in faces Tall and naked ,their splendor Not diminished by time's weight Their stones do not saints make But their unfading smiles do We stand with our hands folded Shrunk in our fully clothed bodies - We who came looking for our sun Find our sun will not set today And our glass eye cannot capture him. (The Jain temple in the Samasgarh jungles visited by us for… Continue

The making of the road

Hot were the words, mixed
With liquid tar and boys in the shade
Their eyelids closed and play-heavy
This man turned the drum of liquid
The fires crackled and black smoke
Went up above the tree and red wall
Then smoke became walkable
Smooth and black like a snake. Continue

The return of poetry

April disappeared in the hot afternoon

With idly floating tatters of clouds in the sky

And too much think

Words are things

Words are things, just like the translucent sky
Which, my grandmother says, is, in fact, a thing
The flowers in my courtyard are the blue sky
With new insect-stars appearing in the twilight
These are just like words, thingy and palpable
When they freeze under the leaves they become icicles
And when they verily thaw, they tingle your skin
And feel on your tongue like December snow.
Poetry- words are splinters of the same vitreous sky
The long arms of the m… Continue

He's not drinking hemlock, is he? [grin] The titles of these two pictures together worried me. Nice focal points accenting the big picture.

Mother Nature is such a wonder. When she wants to, she can cram more beauty into a given area than a human would ever conceive. You have caught a microcosm of the entire area in one spot. 5
