The 120 year old Gardner building in the city center is coming down. It's been vacant for 20 years & too far gone to be rehabilitated. It sits across the street from the world HQ of W. B. Mason office supplies. Shot Friday as demolition started. The streets will be closed for a week, what a bottleneck.

I will try to snap pics as the building comes down. Making way for a $100 million revitalizing of the core of the city. The city hall spire is visible on the left of the last pic.

Five days later. The north/south street has been re-opened as they move west with demolition.

Demolition is always fascinating.  I did some daily photography to follow the progress of demolition on Shea Stadium (Mets) here in Queens several years ago.

I expected this to go much faster. These were shot Sunday Jan. 27.

A news paper article kicked me to go snap more pics before it was all gone.

Shot Jan 31.

I wish I had taken more before shots to show the size of the building and the surrounding lots which will be part of the city block redevelopment project.

Shot today

Walking up the snow covered street for a closer look. This is the same street in the very first shot of the series. There is valuable lumber in there of a size no longer available and so many bricks. The long roof structure behind Dunkin Donuts is the central commuter rail station, a vital part of making the city center more attractive to younger condo buyers. This and many other completed factory rehabs would not work without the train.

Continuing the circuit gets me closer to the back side to look through the fence at salvaged timber, some 12 x 12. They remove debris as they demolish so we don't know how much is recycled.

The final 2 for today includes the vacant lot, the now visible W. B. Mason building and a bit more of our City Hall in the background.
