Headed out on a road trip... cameras in tow

For the next couple weeks we'll be heading out into the prairie. First a few days in Rapid City, where we just might be lucky enough to catch one day of the "Black Hills Pow Wow" which is the Lakota gathering for dancing, fancy costumes and exhibits... might make a very different challenge to photograph... very colorful, indoor (flash) photography. I've done none, or very little of this... guess we'll see how they turn out.

Then on to the smallest (population wise) state capital, Pierre. May be able to capture some waterfowl, and some river/dam shots, but we're not there long, so I'm not overly optimistic.

The last week, Diane is having some eye surgeries over in Sux Falls (more about this name, in a moment). There are some very picturesque sites there, but it is just the wrong time of the year for the color, so may just stick to the foliage changes, if we're not too late already. The "falls" is a very pretty location, almost in the center of town.

Ok, why "Sux", instead of its given name "Sioux". During the South Dakota portion of my career ('76 to '98) I had more sojourns to that fair city than I can count. The weather in that part of the world is vastly different than what I'd become accustomed to out west. Fog, Clouds, Rain, but mostly "NO SUN". I do remember one period of an entire Month where Sux Falls was quashed in a thick, deep fog. So after two weeks of this, I'd had enough, so l left work early one day to trek just 70 miles west (to Mitchell) to spend a few hours in SUNSHINE, to recharge my soul. It worked. And from that particular trip, the largest city in South Dakota became forever known as Sux Falls.

I'm laughing at your description of the weather in SF. I spent a few years out in Sacramento, and we used to say that, in the winter, occasionally the fog would lift so we could then see the cloud cover.

Have a good trip! Looking forward to your photos.

Just like a good blues - endless variety of tone and inflection within the limited structure. A truly captivating image!

The ever-so-slight, off-axis perspective really animates this image. As a result, the lives we sense living within the otherwise rigid squares and cubes of the structure seem so much more real and organic. This most subtle compositional device, rega…

Pure Baroque. When the subject is light and shadow, too much content can get in the way. Stark, simple, mysterious and expressive. This is a very strong composition. A bold essay -the spirit of a Caravaggio with the brushwork of a Rembrandt. Great s…
