Herring Run

River Herring are anadromous fish, spawning in fresh water.

Not too many years ago there were community Herring Fish Fries in spring as they 'ran' upstream to spawn. The practice stopped when fish numbers dropped, they are on the rebound now.

A few steps upstream of Edson's grist mill. The water flowing through this outlet powered the mill.

We will walk across the top of the dam.

The walk runs along the top of the dam to the interesting stuff.

Stepping just below the dam for an overview of the 'run'. There is a wide spillway and a narrow spillway with a bend behind.

At the end of the dam is a granite slab over the main double falls we used to look at the spillway.

Herring return year after year. They do not die after spawning like salmon.
