Daily Pics

Breakfast was interrupted by the sound of chainsaws yesterday. It sounded close so I looked around. There they were, prepping the pine I hastily planted 23 years ago. I thought it was 1 foot onto my side of the property line at the time.
I fenced in the yard 12 years ago running the fence along my side of the tree, it had grown fast.
Ever since then that neighbor insisted the tree was on his land. Long story but he was right after all.

(This has got to be the worst case of purple fringe I have ever seen.)
This and 3 other houses went up at about the same time. My lot abuts all others and I'm the lowest one. I felt like I was in a fish bowl so I planted a long row of young pines along the back, I had one left over, that was it.

The problem was the pine was shading their swimming pool.
It gave me privacy.

They calculated for it to fall between the neighbors fence and my young birch and cedar. Both were bent over but not damaged.

Goodbye

Bummer. I hate to see a healthy tree come down because it's shading someone's pool. Still, it's his tree, I guess. (Your flowers look great!)

Now I'm in a fish bowl again.
I was going to plant the 7 ft cedar tree that has to move, the one that sheltered the mantis egg case. But... Maybe a young white Lilac and a Rose of Sharon with another Clematis on the fence. They all have been looking for a permanent home for too long.

You are on the right track. Turn this sad opportunity into a thing of beauty by planting fast growing flowering shrubs. I am still amazed at how different people's aesthetic sensibilities can be.

I can move the Lilac any time but the Rose of Sharon and Clematis will have to wait till fall.
There is an other part to this story as well. A few days after the tree came down the guy drained his pool. The water had not been treated yet but he let it out too fast. It ran across another neighbors lawn, picking up Scott's Weed & Feed to deposit it in my perennial bed. Fortunately, I noticed it early enough to grab my spade and run over to divert the flow. Unfortunately, I was a little late. I lost a couple dahlias and annuals, an old cluster of Primrose was almost killed, the flower buds are dead but new growth is coming. Two Clematis and Peonies showed stress but have since perked up. Ah, life in the city.

OK, not that would've caused me to get a wee bit cranky! Sounds like it could've been much worse, though and the losses were minimal.
Hey - is this one of those above-ground pools? Next time something's shading it, he should just move the pool! LOL.
Andy P Comment by Andy P on June 14, 2009 at 9:30pm
It could have been much worse. Yes it is an above ground pool, moving it would require moving his shed as well. Unless he wanted to clear the 'natural' space he let go 23 years ago, big job.
The other guy is a first time homeowner, pleasant and friendly but too interested in a lush green lawn, lol.
