This was an interesting outing for me, not only for the history but also the extensive stone work in the canals.

Only one inoperative water wheel remains.

Grist mills ground grain into flower, this one used water power.

The power generating water twists through the site.

The water is golden from the natural iron content.

Numerous small canals are evident.

The last remaining building.

A gnarly old tree by the parking lot. No ID.

This is a huge stone.

The Ames family was prominent in the area. Their shovel manufacturing grew into an empire. A much larger plant was built in Easton, MA where the majority of shovels used in the California and Alaska gold rushes were made.

Sarah had a good time too.

A satelite view showing the canals and general layout.

The water flows from left to right.
Scenes to the left of Arch Street will be featured in an upcoming Herring Run blog.

Very interesting and nicely photographed photo essay, Andy. I've visited a few historic grist mills and find them fascinating.

I just came across a pic of Dexter's Grist Mill which we visited in 2005. I see it's been around since the 1600s. (I had trouble posting the link which is why it's separate from this post.)
